I’m writing as a concerned Ontario resident who strongly opposes Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025. I understand the goal is to grow the economy and speed up development, but this bill feels like it's doing so at the cost of our environment, our communities, and Indigenous rights.

One of the most troubling parts is how this bill weakens the Environmental Bill of Rights. Cutting out public consultation and environmental reviews makes it feel like decisions will be made behind closed doors, with no room for feedback from the people these projects will impact most.

The idea of “special economic zones” is also concerning. Allowing certain projects to bypass provincial and municipal laws, just because they’re considered “trusted” seems incredibly risky. It feels like it opens the door to unchecked development that could harm ecosystems, public health, and local communities.

I’m especially worried about how this bill affects Indigenous consultation and species protection. Replacing the Endangered Species Act is a step backward at a time when we should be doing more, not less, to protect biodiversity. And Indigenous nations deserve full, respectful engagement on projects that affect their lands and futures.

I truly hope the government reconsiders this bill. We need economic growth, but not at the expense of our environment, our democratic rights, and our relationships with Indigenous communities.
