Why are we going backwards on policies of the highest importance? This is a bad bill and reflects poorly on our province and commitments to ecological safety. The premier has already made disastrous, irreversible decisions concerning the bulldozing Ontario Place, which was a of migratory importance to many birds and was importance to local coyotes who are now wandering into west Toronto areas such as Liberty Village with no place to go. In addition, the potential destruction of the green belt is erasing the ecosystems that every human and non-human beings rely on. We need to say NO to Bill 5, and stop introducing legislation that undermines not only ecological habitats, but Indigenous communities and non-Indigenous communities alike who will have to face the disastrous consequences of this bill now and in the future. I did not sign up for this as an Ontarian or Canadian who values clean water, clean air, biodiversity, habitat conservation and restoration. This bill is joy aligned with the values of the average person who lives in Ontario, and also the timing of this bill, which was slipped in under the cover of an election, is undemocratic. The bill laments how much time it takes to approve permits for development, but what we have learned from decades of rushed decision-making that has led to the problems we face as a province, is that we NEED time and protocols in place to ensure the best outcomes for everyone. This bill makes me very concerned for the mindset and attitudes of our leadership, and the lack of care or concern for how this affects the wellbeing of our children and future generations. It’s time to start acting like responsible adults, and less like wilfully ignorant colonizers.
