As an Ontario resident, I’m VERY opposed to these changes to the Endangered Species Act. While we do need housing (I’m a Millennial, I’m VERY aware of the housing crisis) protecting our environment, ecosystems and the species who also call Ontario home is imperative to our long-term stability as human beings on this planet. The regulations we have protect from devastating, irreversible loss of species that maintain the ecosystems that allow us to produce food, regulate our climate, mitigate the effects of flooding, drought and other catastrophic effects of climate change. As people who are fortunate to call the Great Lakes region home, we are incredibly blessed with natural resources and natural beauty that is unlike anywhere else on the planet and we not only have a duty to protect what we have, but MUST protect it for our own benefit and longevity so we can maintain these resources for generations to come. We are also an economy that benefits from a huge amount of tourism based on this natural beauty. We need to build in a conscientious way that maintains our natural resources and keeps the tourism viable.
These regulations are not for fun, they are not to ruin anyone’s day, they are a direly important to protect the plants and animals that keep our ecosystem in balance and keep Ontario beautiful and bountiful. If we scrap these regulations, we risk destroying what makes Ontario great!
