Dear government officials,
The proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act, approved by Doug Ford, pose a significant threat to Ontario’s environment, wildlife, and Indigenous rights. By repealing the existing protections and replacing them with weaker regulations, this decision prioritizes short-term economic gains over long-term ecological sustainability. The narrowing of habitat definitions and removal of recovery strategies for at-risk species will accelerate habitat destruction and biodiversity loss. Additionally, this move disregards the concerns of Indigenous communities, whose sacred lands and treaty rights are deeply intertwined with environmental stewardship. The erosion of these protections further deepens public distrust in the provincial government, as it signals a willingness to override scientific and community-based conservation efforts in favor of unchecked industrial expansion. Ontario can benefit from its natural resources without dismantling the safeguards that ensure responsible and sustainable development. Instead of weakening environmental laws, the government should explore alternative approaches that balance economic growth with ecological preservation.
Thank you for your consideration,
Ontario Citizen
