I am writing to express my deep concern and opposition to the proposed bill that would weaken protections for endangered species in Ontario under the guise of promoting affordable housing. While the need for affordable housing is urgent, it should not come at the expense of irreversible ecological destruction.

Endangered species play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, which in turn support clean air, water, and food security for all Ontarians. Eroding these protections sets a dangerous precedent, prioritizing short-term economic gains over long-term environmental sustainability. There are ways to address the housing crisis without sacrificing biodiversity—such as prioritizing brownfield redevelopment, improving urban density policies, and investing in sustainable building practices.

Ontario’s Endangered Species Act exists for a reason: to prevent the permanent loss of vulnerable wildlife and their habitats. Once these species and ecosystems are gone, they cannot be recovered. I urge you to reconsider this bill and instead pursue solutions that balance responsible development with environmental stewardship.
