Using the rationale of urgency for new housing should not supersede the current rules in place to protect the most vulnerable of wildlife species in our province. By building homes in areas where these animals exist, we are using a short sighted approach to solving the housing problem. Areas that have already been assessed and approved for homes should be prioritized for more intensification. Sprawl is not the answer. Homes aiming to be built on current natural and agricultural lands are generally larger, with a greater carbon footprint, and expensive well beyond the means of the people who are in dire need of housing. By encouraging sprawl by removal of protections towards the native species, we not only eliminate the at risk diverse flora and fauna of our province for future generations, we ultimately hurt ourselves . Developers do not need more land. They need to properly develop the land they have already have approvals for, in a way that benefits many people, not just the wealthy few.
