I strongly oppose the proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and the introduction of the Species Conservation Act, 2025. These changes appear to weaken protections for Ontario’s most vulnerable species and prioritize development and industrial interests over meaningful conservation.
Ontario’s endangered species deserve scientifically informed, transparent, and enforceable protections. The proposed legislation risks undermining critical habitat protections and introduces vague and discretionary measures that could lead to habitat destruction and further population decline. Delegating conservation responsibilities to third parties without stringent oversight raises serious concerns about accountability and the prioritization of ecological integrity.
Now more than ever, as we face a global biodiversity crisis, Ontario must strengthen—not dilute—its commitment to protecting endangered species and ecosystems. I urge the government to halt these changes and engage in meaningful consultation with scientists, Indigenous communities, environmental experts, and the public to uphold and enhance the protections in the existing Endangered Species Act.
Please prioritize long-term ecological health over short-term economic gain. Our natural heritage depends on it.
