I am writing to express my strong opposition to Bill 5, yet another short-sighted move by the Ford government that threatens Ontario’s ecological integrity and democratic processes.

This bill, which aims to strip away oversight, dismantle environmental protections, and prioritize development at the expense of community input, is not only reckless — it is deeply out of step with the values Ontarians hold. After witnessing the destruction of Ontario Place — a public space paved over for a private Nordic spa that no one asked for — it’s clear that this government is not acting in the public’s interest, but in the interest of private profit and political expediency.

Ontario’s ecosystems are not blank slates for corporate ambition. They are living, breathing systems — interdependent, irreplaceable, and already strained. To continue deregulating development while we face climate breakdown, biodiversity loss, and soil and water degradation is not just irresponsible — it’s dangerous.

We don’t need more fast-tracked megaprojects that bulldoze through wetlands, forests, and communities. We need leadership that sees the long game: protecting the land, honouring Indigenous stewardship, restoring what’s been damaged, and building with care, not just concrete.

Enough is enough. Stop using legislative loopholes to erode our environmental safeguards. Listen to the people who actually live here — not just those who seek to profit from its exploitation.

Bill 5 must be withdrawn.
