Bill 5 should be designed by experts and scientists who understand that wildlife and biodiversity has intrinsic value, and that economic growth shouldn’t come at the cost of animal life and the overall welfare of all living beings. As a democratic society, we deserve the right to have total transparency on Bill 5's regressive politicization of wildlife and biodiversity which would pollute the water and air we require for our survival. The lack of oversight and accountability being proposed with Bill 5 infringes on the basic human right to clean water and air as well as the rights of Indigenous people, and habitat protection which is critical to the survival of endangered species. Ontario should lead on conservation rather than proposing Schedule 9, which is anti-democratic; the elected legislature should be setting clear parameters on “designate projects,” rather than arbitrarily applying or revoking laws to different people.
