I am writing to express my strong opposition to Bill 5, which undermines the integrity and independence of Ontario’s conservation authorities. Stripping conservation authorities of their powers to review and comment on development proposals poses a serious threat to Ontario’s environment, public safety, and long-term sustainability.
Bill 5 prioritizes short-term development goals over the protection of wetlands, floodplains, and other critical ecosystems. These natural features are not obstacles—they are vital assets that reduce flood risks, support biodiversity, and provide essential ecological services. By weakening the role of conservation authorities, Bill 5 increases the likelihood of poorly planned development, environmental degradation, and costly consequences for communities.
Ontarians deserve evidence-based decision-making and transparent processes that consider the long-term environmental and economic impacts of development. Conservation authorities are uniquely equipped with the expertise and mandate to provide this oversight. Silencing their input will only lead to greater risk and irreversible damage.
I urge the government to withdraw Bill 5 and instead work collaboratively with conservation authorities, municipalities, Indigenous communities, and citizens to create policies that balance growth with environmental protection.
