I am writing to express strong opposition to Bill 5 and the dangerous precedent it sets for environmental protection in Ontario. This legislation undermines long-standing safeguards for our natural spaces and grants excessive powers to bypass proper environmental oversight.
Premier Ford’s ongoing disregard for environmental due diligence—most notably in the rushed development of the spa at Ontario Place without thorough ecological assessments—demonstrates a troubling pattern. This project blatantly ignored the environmental review process, and Bill 5 appears to be an attempt to normalize that behavior, giving the government license to bulldoze through protected land with no accountability.
Our Great Lakes, wetlands, and wildlife are irreplaceable resources that require careful, science-based stewardship. Stripping away protections for these ecosystems not only endangers biodiversity but also threatens clean drinking water, shoreline stability, and climate resilience.
There must always be clear standards and independent assessments before building on any land—especially public land. Bill 5 represents a dangerous erosion of those standards, prioritizing short-term political gain over the long-term health of our province and its people.
I urge you to reject Bill 5 and reaffirm your commitment to responsible environmental planning and the protection of Ontario’s natural heritage.
