Hello,
My comment is in regard to the proposed changes to the ESA and just how dangerous it is. Not just how dangerous it is to endangered species in Ontario, but how dangerous it is to Ontario's people, and to yourselves. The changes proposed to this act are not only irresponsible to the people of Canada and a direct threat to our future, but could bring upon consequences to Ontario that I don't think you have consulted experts on very much.
To keep it brief, removing the word 'harm' for any endangered species affected by development or other factors opens a can of worms that can be dangerous to all, and there is evidence to prove that the reasoning behind this change is not what the Ontario government claims it is to be. Until it can provide better reasoning, this should not even be considered as an idea, cause from someone who works closely in nature, it is not a good idea that someone from any background, with the exception of someone who doesn't see the threat and just wants to earn more money, could see right in front of their eyes.
It gives developers free reign to destroy habitat that endangered species inhabit or visit with no consequence, but why would they stop there. It is important to consider that people are angry at this supposed change not only cause it brings future harm to endangered species, but all species, including us. This is clearly an act of shameful underlining from the Ontario government to try and give more power to land developers while taking away more power from Ontario's people and the lifeblood that is it's nature. It is often forgotten just how much revenue and economy is created by Ontario's natural landmarks and native species (i.e., Georgian Bay, Bruce Peninsula, all provincial parks, hunting, fishing, the list goes on), and this income far exceeds and benefits the longevity of Ontario compared to another overpriced housing complex.
Southern Ontario has been a victim of these effects for decades. When you remove a wetland, where does that water go every time it rains? When you cut down a forest, where does the heat once trapped in it canopy now go? When you bulldoze a meadow, where does the vitality go? When you strip Ontario's endangered species and Ontario's people of a life of this, where will they go? Chances are, that water, heat, sick health, and its people will all end up on your doorstep, and then where does that leave you the comfort you want? Not with much space.
Please consult the experts on this notion, and abolish the attempted changes to this act, if you truly want Ontario to be "A Place to Grow" and remain "Open for Business." If you let this happen, you're not just losing a few endangered species, you're losing the trust of the people. Nobody can predict what will happen when you lose people's trust.
