I strongly condemn your proposal to amend the Endangered Species Act. The idea of the government having absolute power over which species are deserving of protection is ludicrous. Allowing developers to commence activities upon registration, with no oversight, will do absolutely nothing to protect our most vulnerable wildlife.
The redefining of habitat will also be detrimental to species at risk, as habitat fragmentation is a major cause of decline. Please consult with leading scientists in the field about what constitutes a habitat. The nest and immediate surroundings do not make a habitat. This is not a zoo, but our wetlands and forests. Animals cannot exist in a small cage of trees and be expected to thrive.
I cannot and will not ever support a government who passes a bill such as this one. It’s shameful that the Ford government is gutting environmental protections and dressing it up as “protecting Ontario.” I would like to know WHO in Ontario is protected by this legislation. Certainly not the barn owl, eastern wolf, or little brown bat. I urge you to reconsider passing a bill that will have a devastating impact on our province.
