I strongly oppose the proposed amendments to the Endangered Species Act. These changes will significantly weaken protections for Ontario’s most vulnerable wildlife and ecosystems at a time when we need stronger—not weaker—environmental safeguards.
Allowing developers to destroy endangered species habitat without requiring permission is not only reckless but short-sighted. Once these habitats are lost, they cannot be easily restored. This proposal prioritizes short-term economic gain over long-term environmental sustainability and public interest.
Endangered species are indicators of ecosystem health. Their loss reflects broader ecological collapse that ultimately affects clean air, clean water, and climate resilience—all of which directly impact human well-being. Gutting these protections sends the message that biodiversity and conservation are expendable, which is deeply irresponsible.
We need legislation that upholds science-based decision-making and holds all sectors accountable for preserving the natural heritage that belongs to all Ontarians. I urge you to reconsider these amendments and instead work towards strengthening the Act in ways that protect species and habitats for future generations.
