We strongly oppose Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, as it poses a serious threat to Indigenous rights, environmental sustainability, and democratic governance in Ontario.
Violation of Indigenous Rights Bill 5 disregards the principles of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC), allowing the government to bypass meaningful consultation with First Nations on projects that directly impact their lands and livelihoods. This is a clear breach of trust and a step backward in reconciliation efforts.
Environmental Rollbacks The bill repeals the Endangered Species Act, replacing it with weaker regulations that prioritize development over conservation. It also enables the creation of Special Economic Zones, where projects can be exempted from provincial and municipal environmental laws. This reckless approach threatens Ontario’s biodiversity and natural resources.
Archeological and Cultural Risks Bill 5 allows the government to exempt projects from archeological assessments, putting First Nations’ historical sites at risk of destruction. These assessments are crucial for preserving Indigenous heritage and ensuring responsible development.
Unchecked Government Power The bill grants the provincial government the ability to override existing laws and regulations, effectively silencing opposition and public participation. This undermines democratic processes and sets a dangerous precedent for governance in Ontario.
We call on the Ontario government to withdraw Bill 5 immediately and engage in genuine consultation with Indigenous communities, environmental experts, and local stakeholders to develop legislation that respects rights, protects nature, and fosters sustainable economic growth
