I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007, and the introduction of the Species Conservation Act, 2025, as detailed in ERO 025-0380.

While I understand the government’s intent to streamline processes for housing, transit, and infrastructure projects, I am deeply concerned that the proposed “registration-first” approach could significantly weaken protections for Ontario’s at-risk species. Allowing activities to commence immediately after registration, without prior comprehensive review, may lead to irreversible harm to vulnerable species and their habitats.

Moreover, granting the government discretion to add or remove species from the protected list, even when classifications are determined by the independent Committee on the Status of Species at Risk in Ontario (COSSARO), undermines the scientific integrity of species protection. This shift could politicize decisions that should be based solely on scientific evidence.

Additionally, redefining key terms and removing protections, such as the concept of “harassment,” may further erode the safeguards currently in place for endangered species.

I urge you to reconsider these proposed changes and advocate for policies that prioritize the preservation of Ontario’s rich biodiversity. Protecting our natural heritage should not be compromised for short-term economic gains.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I look forward to your response and to seeing you champion the protection of our province’s endangered species.
