As a member of the Owen Sound Field Naturalists, I am concerned about the changes to the ESA. We are home to many, many of Ontario's endangered species such as 9 species of wild orchids, 9 species of ferns, and many birds, mammals and sensitive habitat.

We are also facing increased development including cottages, full time residences and commercial enterprises. While this is good for our local and provincial economy, our endangered species will never recover from habitat loss and destruction. We need assurances from the government that you will protect the wider habitat of animal species and vascular plants. A HUGE corridor is necessary for animals such as the black bear on the Bruce Peninsula, a genetically unique sub species that dens in our karst topography. The immediate area surrounding a dwelling place is not enough! For vascular plants, the root zone is only one part of their survival. Tree canopy, drainage patterns and subsequent disturbances will impact their development and successful propagation.

We urge you to think forward, and ensure the safety of our treasured species for generations to come. Be proactive in cleaning up old industrial sites, quarries and abandoned factories instead. Build green and in harmony with nature.
