I am writing on behalf of KAIROS Guelph, an ecumenical social justice group associated with KAIROS Canada. KAIROS Guelph’s recent work has been on Indigenous Rights and on Ecological Justice.
On both these issues we strongly oppose Bill 5.
The government should ensure that all land use legislation under consideration honours the constitutional requirement to meaningfully consult with First Nations. Bill 5 disregards the duty to consult, both a serious step backwards in the process of reconciliation with First Nations and a great risk to any hope of fruitful partnerships for future endeavors.
On ecological issues, we are very distressed that the government is destroying decades of science-based environmental protection, including repealing the Endangered Species Act. Economic prosperity relies on a healthy environment. Bill 5 severely undermines that connection.
The Special Economic Zones are an undemocratic submission to a few special interests.
Please stop Bill 5. Destroying our democracy, environment and reconciliation with First Nations will reduce our resiliency, a counterproductive response to tariffs.
We feel there are safe, healthy ways to cooperate for appropriate development, ways that protect our environment and honour our Indigenous partners.
