I oppose Bill 5. I want stronger environmental protections, especially for endangered species. I oppose short cuts for industry with no public oversight. I oppose overriding the law in special economic zones.

We are in a global biodiversity crisis. In Ontario alone, more than 230 plants and animals are at risk. The healthy forests, waters and wetlands species at risk sustain all Ontarians. Many respected and reputable organizations have voiced opposition and concern about this Bill including CWF, WWF, TWS, WCS, Ontario Nature, Environmental Defence, Ecojustice, Ontario Out of Doors, and many others.

I urge your government to:

– Cancel Bill 5 and plans to scrap the Endangered Species Act, including the implementation of “regulation-free zones” for resource extraction.

– Commit to strengthening the Endangered Species Act.

Rather than significantly weakening protections for species at risk, your government should be safeguarding biodiversity, respecting Indigenous rights and ensuring local communities benefit from the ecosystem services that nature freely provides.
