I unequivocally oppose Bill 5 and I implore the provincial government to stop Bill 5 and instead focus on protecting species at risk. It is short-sighted and irresponsible to remove protections for species at risk and to prioritize short-term economic benefit for wealthy developers over the long-term persistence of endangered species and natural habitats. Healthy and diverse ecosystems are crucial for human health and safety (clean air and water, reducing the impacts of natural disasters, carbon storage), as well as a strong economy (food production, sustainably sourced natural resources). Bill 5 also undermines the rights of Indigenous Peoples, who are the rightful stewards of this land and whose opinions should be considered in all decisions. There needs to be accountability for governments and companies that jeopardize natural habitats, and, by extension, disregard human safety, Indigenous rights, and the natural legacy of our province. It is essential to have evidence-based, scientific policies and practices that reflect the need for habitat protection and species at risk conservation in this current biodiversity crisis. Please, take the intelligent and informed position and say no to Bill 5 and say yes to protecting the natural world.
