I would strongly urge the government against the proposed changes to the endangered species act.
A report by the office of the auditor has found that this government has already failed to protect its endangered species. The report mentions that more species are now at risk (22% more) , and annual approvals that harm these species have increased by over 6000%.(comparing 2009 and 2020). A follow up report in 2023 by the auditor also revealed that the government made little to no progress (or chose not to implement) 75% of the recommendations(made to address the shortcomings mentioned above) by the auditor. Just to make it clear - all this was under the current administration. The proposed changes will likely leave endangered species even worse off then they already are under this government . Giving any government the power to remove species from the list will not help this at all. That is a decision that should be backed by science not politics. In fact most of these changes are not scientifically backed at all. Such as removing hunting territories from the habitat definition, which is arguably the most important part. Many predatory species require vast territories to support stable populations. Another major harm is that this government isn't even required to develop recovery strategies for species it will inevitably harm. Listing all the harms this act will have on endangered species would take a whole essay. If the government wants to go through with this it will tell the people of Ontario, that this government hasn't learned from its past mistakes and is willing to destroy Ontario's natural heritage under the guise of "economic progress".
