I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and the introduction of the Species Conservation Act, 2025 as outlined under the “Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025.”
These changes appear to prioritize short-term economic development at the expense of Ontario’s most vulnerable wildlife and habitats. Exempting projects like the Ontario Place Redevelopment from Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993 undermines public transparency, accountability, and environmental stewardship — principles that should be strengthened, not weakened.
The Endangered Species Act is a cornerstone of Ontario’s commitment to biodiversity. Diluting its protections or bypassing environmental review processes sets a dangerous precedent and threatens the survival of species already at risk due to habitat loss, climate change, and development pressures.
Ontario's prosperity depends on healthy ecosystems. Once species are gone, they are gone forever — no economic gain can justify such irreversible harm.
I urge you to reject these proposed changes and instead invest in policies that balance sustainable development with long-term environmental responsibility and conservation.
