I am writing to express my concern regarding the proposed amendments to the Mining Act (1990), Electricity Act (1998), and Ontario Energy Board Act (1998) as part of the Protect Ontario’s Economy and Build a More Prosperous Ontario Act.
The proposed changes to "streamline the permitting process" for designated mining projects raise serious environmental and Indigenous rights concerns. Speeding up approvals without adequate environmental oversight or meaningful consultation—particularly with affected First Nations communities—risks long-term ecological damage and undermines Ontario’s legal and moral obligations under existing treaties and reconciliation frameworks.
Similarly, proposed limitations on foreign participation in the energy sector must be approached with caution. While energy security is important, vague or overly broad restrictions could deter critical investment, reduce competition, and ultimately increase costs for Ontario taxpayers. Protectionism in this context may compromise innovation, sustainability, and affordability.
Ontario’s prosperity depends on careful planning, transparent processes, and respect for the environment and Indigenous rights. I urge you to reconsider these amendments and ensure that economic development is not pursued at the expense of democratic accountability, environmental protection, and long-term sustainability.
