I am opposed to the amendments to the ESA and I am opposed to the government repealing the ESA. The proposed Species Conservation Act, 2025 (SCA) does not take a strong enough stand in protecting wild species in Ontario.

How can an animal’s habitat be equated to a nest or dwelling without taking into consideration the range required for finding food, looking for a mate, and more? With all that we know nowadays about the interdependence of trees, fungi, and other organisms, limiting protection to a plant’s root system is shortsighted. These are just two examples of why the amendments should not be allowed.

Has The Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025 taken into consideration the economic value represented by nature and natural areas? I would argue that oxygen production, soil retention, water cleansing, and climate control - all benefits of natural areas such as wetlands - have a far greater economic value longterm compared to the short term economic gains from industry.
