I am writing to express my strong opposition to Bill 5, which poses a grave threat to Ontario’s endangered species, ecosystems, and the democratic rights of its citizens.
The provisions in this bill that would remove the requirement for developers to obtain permits for activities affecting wildlife are deeply alarming. This move prioritizes unchecked development over environmental stewardship and puts countless species and habitats at immediate risk. These are irreversible decisions. Once we lose biodiversity and natural heritage, we cannot get it back.
This bill flies in the face of what Canadians hold dear — our so-called “maple values” of environmental protection, sustainability, and responsibility. It’s not just bad policy; it’s an insult to the legacy of conservation that Ontario has tried to uphold. Letting developers bypass critical environmental protections will lead to mass public outcry and long-term ecological and social damage.
Equally disturbing is the apparent attempt to grant the provincial government the power to override constitutional rights. This is not only unconstitutional but authoritarian in nature. It sets a dangerous precedent where environmental protections and civil liberties can be steamrolled to serve private interests. That is not democratic governance — that is erosion of public trust.
I urge you in the strongest possible terms to withdraw Bill 5 immediately. Ontarians — and Canadians at large — want leadership that respects nature, upholds the rule of law, and protects the rights of all people and species who call this province home.
Please do the right thing and stop this harmful bill before irreparable damage is done.
