I am deeply concerned about the proposed changes to, and ultimate proposed repeal of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The proposed changes are not in alignment with current scientific consensus on species conservation and habitat protection. The proposed changes will have devastating and irreversible impacts on Ontario's biodiversity and natural heritage. Canada is a country defined by its natural environment. Through these proposed changes we threaten our own national character and integrity. Responsible development is essential in order to combat our housing crisis. This can be and should be done without the proposed changes to the ESA. Species at risk are not red tape, they are an essential part of ecosystems and communities. Biodiverse communities make living in Canada more enjoyable. By reducing the habitat protections we sentence many of these species to an accelerated decline and extinction. I love Ontario and I love Canada. I want everyone to be housed and I want us to succeed and grow as a county. Species at Risk must be part of the picture. These proposed changes also trample on indigenous rights and this unacceptable. I implore you to listen to biologists and at the very least maintain current habitat protections. Current provincial protections are already not strong enough as identified by the Auditor General of Ontario. These changes would be a travesty and would bring shame upon our province.
