Eliminating the Endangered Species Act is a very short-sighted measure with extremely bad long term repercussions for all Ontarians both practically and politically for any party that supports this action.
If Ontario fails to protect not just the dwelling but the entire habitat of at-risk species, and if threatened and endangered bird species have no plans for recovery and survival, then many of these species will begin to fade and future generations will learn about biodiversity not from their lived experience and connection to the land, but in the context of what the few were willing to sacrifice for sheer greed.
Many of these species are culturally important to both Indigenous and settles Ontarians. The current premier has stood out from the rest of his party in this political moment by distancing himself from the current US administration and its aggressive rhetoric towards Canada. However, if the current leadership is only willing to talk large about any sense of cultural pride in being Canadian, while at the same time echoing and pursuing similar regressive environmental policies that endanger the very things that makes us proud to be distinctly Canadian, like our migratory birds, then not only is this leadership hypocritical, it also stands to do more long-lasting cultural damage to Ontario than the Trump administration and voters should respond accordingly.
Please reconsider and scrap this proposal. It is not worth it.
