Bill 5 is concerning because it undermines critical environmental protections, especially the safeguards for wildlife and biodiversity. Removing or weakening the Endangered Species Act and allowing development in Special Economic Zones without strong environmental oversight puts already-vulnerable ecosystems at risk.
Biodiversity isn’t optional—it underpins clean air, fresh water, fertile soil, climate regulation, and even public health. When we lose species and disrupt ecosystems, we increase the risk of floods, wildfires, crop failures, and disease—all of which have serious economic consequences.
A strong economy depends on a healthy environment. Long-term prosperity and job creation—especially in sectors like tourism, agriculture, forestry, and clean tech—require functioning ecosystems and stable natural systems. Protecting nature isn’t a barrier to growth; it’s the foundation for it.
We need to grow the economy with the environment, not at its expense. Bill 5 moves us in the wrong direction.
