Mr Ford,
Protecting Ontario is not about protecting profits. It is not about protecting developers. It is not about making life easier for your construction tycoon buddies who stand to make a fortune should this bill be passed. Protecting Ontario is about protecting the water we drink, the air we breathe, the land Canada's Indigenous Peoples allow us to call our home through more than 40 treaties and land agreements here in Ontario.
What makes Ontario so beautiful has always been it's incredible nature. Why live in Oakville, if all the old growth is cut down and replaced with condos? Why have a cottage near Huntsville on the lake, if the water is contaminated? Ontario's vast ecosystem is balanced and delicate, and any attempt to strip protections away from them is a direct threat to all animal and plantlife. We need MORE environmental protections in place, working together with plans to safely develop this province sustainably.
Bill 5 will not just fail to "protect" Ontario, it threatens to destroy everything that makes it beautiful.
We remember what happened with the green belt, Doug. Our memories are not so short as you would hope. And if you pass this egregious bill, once the trees are cut, the animals are dead, and the homes are built (and vacant), Ontarians will remember what your priorities were. Money comes first, Ontario comes second.
Do the right thing,
-LD
