As a resident of Halton Hills and Ontario voter, I object strenuously and fulsomely to the proposed design and contents of Bill 5.
This bill is a gross example of political over-reach and political opportunism. While I agree that minerals and mining are of essential use in our current and future provincial economy, this bill does a disservice to making that process happen effectively and with the proper democratic consent of the people of Ontario.
Within the Bill, the proposed repeal of the Endangered Species Act should be removed. The Endangered Species Act is a necessary part of protecting our lands and waters for all of Ontario and is not a simplistic impediment to be tossed aside and classed as 'red tape'.
Further the proposed suspension of provincial and municipal laws in Special Economic Zones must be cancelled. It is not democratic to create special lawless zones to meet mining priorities. As a parent of a young blue collar worker, I object to the suspension of health and safety laws that would endanger his safety on any projects involved in this zone.
I object to the provincial cabinet being given powers of approval for matters, without any oversight by the legislature. As proposed it is governance by stealth and secrecy behind closed doors - which is not a quality of a well functioning democracy.
First Nations must also be consulted in the re-working of the Bill as it disrespects their rights and the needs of their community.
I will be watching for meaningful changes to this proposed legislation.
