As an Ontarian and Canadian Citizen, I am strongly opposed to the proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act (ESA), in particular the amendments in the Interim Period Changes of the Protect Ontario By Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025.
These changes will disrupt the recovery of species and threatened wildlife biodiversity, which are already under critical decline. If the wealth of Canada is in its resources, it would be counterintuitive to remove regulations or lessen regulations for the protection of these resources. An industry or business would be lucky to last a few decades in operation. The interconnected relationships between our native species and environment take a millenia to build. The reduction of the definition of "habitat" and the removal of "harass" from prohibitions regarding harms to species  will greatly reduced the effectiveness of ESA. Resources such us our biodiversity for research, eco friendly tourism, and environmental health will be immensely affected and may not recover even if changes are temporary.
The Ontario government should not be looking at important regulations as red tape, and instead should be looking for innovative and creative solutions to uphold environmental regulations and standards within proposed economic strategies.
