The science is clear: biodiversity is central to Ontario and the country's economy, health & well-being. Biodiversity in Ontario is being threatened and lost at unprecedented rates, compromising any chance of a sustainable and prosperous future for current and future generations.

Proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act unfortunately ignore all the peer-reviewed science as well as Indigenous and local knowledge that ecosystems are more than the sum of their individual parts. Oversimplifying habitats and moving forward without care or consideration of a species and their complex ecosystem needs is dangerous, unwise, and unsustainable for Ontario's future.

The science is also clear that mitigation, compensatory and other approaches to rehabilitate, recreate or transplant species is also NOT working in Ontario and around the world. Species an their habitats do not recover, further compromising any future nature-based resources or ecosystem services.

Ontario is also on Native Land. The proposed changes have not been developed in partnership with other Rightsholders, and is therefore illegal and unethical.

There are many other evidence-based approaches that can be pursued to advance the goals of economic and social growth in Ontario. Changing this Act is not one of them.
