I have the following concerns about the new Species Conservation Act that the government is proposing. My concerns are summarized as follows:

I dont ageee with the government's ability to de-list species that COSSARO experts identify as needing protection.

Species recovery strategies and management plans are the backbone to conserving species and should be continued.

A Registration first approach may work to protect some species as long as proper mitigation measures are implemented (e.g. construction outside of critical breeding timing windows), but would not be effective for all species. For example, draining a Blandings turtle pond to pave a road is not the same as removing one tree that could provide suitable endanged bat habitat to allow for road widening. This approach would need accountability and a lot of guidance to work.

Without a SAR Advisory committee, who will be accountable for whether species are effectively being protected under the new act?
