I have many issues with the proposed intermediate changes to the endangered species act (2007) and the proposal for the species conservation act (2025)
Environmental Registry of Ontario number 025-0380.

A major problem I can see is the lack of public consultation and too much contol given to the government. This proposed amendment gives the government the discretion on what species are protected would also have discretion to remove protected species from the list. This is a huge problem as it leaves out important stakeholders who should have a say in what species should be protected. It also leaves the act open to immediate changes that could have detrimental effects on the native population of a species.

I also have a problem with the proposed change in the act to the definition of habitat. It should remain to include broad areas, as animals use more land than just the area where they eat and sleep. The current definition of habitat must stay. It is important that there are delays in building requirements, this helps all stakeholders share their interests, particularly those that have a vested long term interest in protectting the land and watershed and the species that live on the land and in the watershed.

The most troubling thing about the proposed change is that the proposed new legislative framework also removes the express ability to establish an advisory committee. This is one of the most pivotal and important parts of any construction project. The voices of those that live on the land and use the waterways need to be heard and considered the most. This includes the plants and animals that do not have the ability to voice their own concerns. An advisory committee would consist of stakeholders and should exist to look at a project in a holistic and long-term way. It will delay projects but that is important, to reduce the negative environmental impacts on our land, air and waterways, that often cannot be reversed or repaired.
