The proposed changes to Ontario’s Endangered Species Act are deeply concerning and ultimately detrimental to the protection of biodiversity in the province. By prioritizing development and industry over science-based conservation efforts, these changes weaken the core purpose of the ESA—to protect and recover species at risk and their habitats. Delays in habitat protection, increased flexibility for developers, and the reduced role of scientific experts in decision-making undermine the very foundation of species recovery. These changes signal a troubling shift away from environmental stewardship, putting short-term economic interests ahead of long-term ecological sustainability. Ontario’s natural heritage deserves stronger safeguards, not diminished protections.
