This is egregious. Bill 5 undermines the democratic process and is one the worst pieces of legislation Ontario has ever seen.
There is no conceivable way that this should this pass through. We are in the middle of a climate crisis and the conservative government has shown they have a clear disregard for the use of our land and public space as seen in the mega spa deal with a foreign company with only one spa open prior.
Instead of strengthening the Endangered Species Act during a global biodiversity crisis, Bill 5 will scrap the Endangered Species Act. Many of these species are in great decline, once they are gone, they are not coming back. This is catastrophic for Ontario and the repercussions are endless and very damaging.
Industries will just have to register in order to operate, without clear conditions to prevent harms to species.
Bill 5 does not mention the rights of Indigenous peoples for consultation even once.
Listing species as endangered will be subject to partisan interference and no longer an independent science based assessment.
ANY place in Ontario can be designated as a 'special economic' zone. It's a blank slate for the government to do whatever they want, wherever they want. No transparency, no criteria (similar to what's happening at Ontario Place).
