As an Ontario resident and committed environmental advocate, I am deeply concerned by the implications of Bill 5. This legislation appears to prioritize rapid economic development at the expense of our province’s most cherished natural assets—our lakes, forests, wetlands, and green spaces. While I understand the need for a thriving economy, it cannot come through short-sighted policies that undermine the long-term environmental sustainability that communities, ecosystems, and future generations rely on. Ontario’s natural heritage is not an obstacle to progress; it is the foundation of our wellbeing and prosperity.
Equally troubling is the erosion of public oversight and Indigenous rights embedded in this bill. Rolling back environmental assessments, limiting the ability of communities to voice opposition, and overriding treaty obligations with First Nations is not only unjust—it is reckless. These moves sideline the very voices that have historically protected the land and ensure important decisions are made with balance and care. True economic growth must be inclusive and responsible, not imposed through top-down directives that silence civic and Indigenous participation.
I urge you to reconsider Bill 5 and engage in a transparent, inclusive dialogue with all stakeholders—particularly Indigenous communities and environmental stewards—before making changes that could irreversibly damage the integrity of our province’s ecosystems. Ontario deserves policies that uplift both people and the planet, not ones that pit one against the other.
