While reducing paperwork required for economic activity is a recognizable "conservative government" aim that is liable to appeal to its voting base, this minimizes safety to human health and the environment.
The proposal details on the ERO page state: "There are no anticipated environmental impacts as a result of these proposed changes to the Mining Act, 1990."
Mining is a hugely environmentally damaging activity which also can have dramatic health impacts while the mine operates but also long after the mine closes. As such, the permit process should be detailed and extensive and in no way rushed or minimized. The permit process must recover costs and be examined by knowledgable individuals. Mining should only be undertaken in a culturally, socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable and responsible manner with a commitment to preventing impacts on public health and safety and the environment.
Due to the large land area and long term impacts of mining, government regulations must focus on the protection of people and biota now and in the future, not on making money for corporations.
