The Ontario Endangered Species Act needs to be strengthened, not weakened. The change of the definition of the word "habitat" is inappropriate at best. All accepted definitions of "habitat" include the natural environment in which an organism lives and grows, not simply an organism's dwelling; it is illogical to make such a change. This seems a rather self-serving to tool to be used by the Ontario Government to reduce it's accountability with relation to urban expansion.
We must strive to live sustainably and part of that includes protecting natural lands and the diverse range of species that occupy those spaces in an educated and thoughtful way. Our Natural Resources are our greatest strength in a world where global climate change is impacting food security, access to freshwater and global warming.
Yes, urban expansion is a reality, but it does not need to be a death sentence. There must be balance in our natural world.
Governments come and go, but the legacy of their actions affect humanity for generations to come.
We must act responsibly and be accountable to the future generations to come We must protect endangered and non-endangered species alike. For our sake. For the sake of our children. For the sake of Ontario.
