I am concerned about the proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act and how it will impact the recovery of species at risk in Ontario. Bill 5 actively dismisses recovery strategies that provide a framework for province specific protection measures, and includes special economic zones where developers face no consequences for interfering with species at risk and removes the ability for Indigenous communities and the Public to be consulted in the decision making process. Furthermore, this Bill limits the definition of habitat to only species with a residence and allows the harassment of species at risk. The longevity of our species at risk shouldn’t come at the expense of economic interests. This Bill replaces the tools in the Endangered Species Act with vague goals and a lack of urgency for imperial species. These changes should be reconsidered for their potential long term effects on our environment and biodiversity.
