Grundy Lake Provincial Park, and French River PP are located on Georgian bay. Throughout this hot spot area there are plentiful wetlands home to thousands of species. More specifically species at risk. Now I know Ontario doesn’t care for species at risk but Grundy Lake PP and French River PP do. For example Grundy has had a turtle monitoring project that has been running for 10 years. In the more recent years, there had been a blandings turtle tracking project. Blandings turtle are one of out many at risk turtle species and many call grundy, and french river their home. My taking away land, to implement large traffic flow and road scale, this leads to higher road mortality. Not only to smaller species, like the blandings turtle or the massasauga rattle snake, another species at risk, essentially only found in this area now due to their rapid decline in population. Larger species are pit at risk too. This area is one of the biggest hot spots for bear activity in Ontario. This means, bears will have a harder time crossing to get from one side of the highway to another, I can personally say I have seen a large number of bears crossing this highway specifically during my time of being in these areas. Don’t forget our moose. Think of all the damage to these peatlands you’ll be causing. Do you understand how long it takes for wetlands to accumulate peat and carbon dioxide? I dont think you do, its not a renewable source. Wetlands are Carbon sinks, let me break that down for you. The Carbon in our atmosphere, let out by many different factors is what help heats the planet (hence climate change) which is happening at a rapid pace. Wetlands absorb carbon out of the atmosphere. Destroying these wetlands and other forested areas will release that into the atmosphere. Grundy and French river are two protected areas for a reason. The government continues to take away our lands and develop it for individuals who dont take care of our planet. There has never been a time where I have seen road work fully come to a finish and said “oh this is a lot nicer than it was before”. Do you understand why? Because there is no need for it. You’re cause years of built up traffic by expanding the roadways due to construction and congestion. Just for it to not make a commuter a whole lot of difference.
