It has come to our attention that Strada Aggregates has applied for a new water taking permit for January 1, 2026, in preparation for their proposed blasting quarry of 180 feet below the water table. This application to increase to 5,000,000 litres/day would be used for aggregate washing within their quarry footprint.
Additional water pumping and diverting from the new proposed quarry indicates in their hydrogeological studies that an additional 6,600,000 litres/day would be necessary to pump or divert around the quarry footprint. Please refer to Hunter and Associates Environmental and Engineering Consultants, File Date: January 23, 2025, Source: Excerpts from Appendix E: Impact Assessment, October 2024, Table 6.1 Summary of water management fluxes.
Our property is 1 kilometre to the northeast of the proposed quarry and is a licensed Aquaculture Operation for raising speckle and rainbow trout. The water taking permit for our operation was 7121-9Y7HP7. Our new 10 year permit is P-300-3349985407 and it allows us to divert stream water through our ponds and fish rearing building and return back into the stream. This second generation farm has been operating for approximately 40 years.
With the potato farms just to the north and west increasing their use of irrigation (5 permits with a total of 19,552,200 litres/day maximum) has put additional strain on the water table supply, especially in drier years. We have seen a noticeable reduction on stream volume on drier years.
The addition of Strada’s new request for water taking permit will only put more demand on the limited water supply that we rely on for our wells and surface spring water streams.
The application for an additional 2,600,000 litres/day for a Class 3 water taking permit should not be approved.
The quarry proposal of blasting 180 feet below the water table would be a water quality and quantity disaster for our Horning’s Mills Community and surrounding areas.
Please do not approve this application!
