I am utterly opposed to this Bill and the details. Specifically prohibiting vehicle lanes for new bicycle lanes. Firstly, the provincial government needs to stay out of municipal governance.
This bill strips cities of local authority and decision-making, even when projects are supported by evidence and local residents.
It will worsen traffic congestion, not reduce it. The government’s own experts have consistently said that bike lanes are not a cause of gridlock. Furthermore, climate change exists even if you want to pretend otherwise, and in a large urban area people need to be encouraged to use alternate means of transportation (transit, walking, cycling). This undermines climate goals and worsens public health by not encouraging those other means of transportation (not to mention cycling keeps people active).
It will make roads more dangerous. Protected bike lanes prevent serious injuries and deaths for people biking, walking, and driving.
It threatens other uses of road space that communities rely on and enjoy, including transit priority, safe crossings, patios, curbside access, and school streets.
I myself am someone who cycles, walks and takes TTC in my neighbourhood. I don't own a car, but I am a home owner (let that blow the Premiers mind). There is nothing better than cycling in protected lanes to do a bunch of errands (i.e supporting local businesses), to meet up with friends at a local restaurant or just get some exercise. I cycle all year round (look to Montreal cycling culture and infrastructure - fully possible to cycle all year round when you make it a priority). And I have a little baby - of which i am very excited to be cycling with them, but many streets in the City are not possible to do so with because of how violently motorists drive (Especially if there are no speed cameras). It is so sad to see a few number of friends of the Premier who drive shaping municipal policy when the Premier was not elected to do that and the majority of residents don't want.
