This bill strips municipalities from their right to manage traffic according to appropriate and local conditions.
It lets the Province ban any reduction of motor vehicle lanes, and the wording is so broad that it will not just impact bike lanes but also affect bus priority lanes, patios, school streets, and other street improvements that rely on reallocating space. This isn't just about settling grudges against Toronto. The consequences will be felt across Ontario.
The Ford government also suggests that traffic and congestion is a major source of air pollution, which is rich considering their very own studies and reports, as well as thousands of documented and peer reviewed studies, suggest that active transportation policies and infrastructure are the best ways to reduce transportation-related air pollution in cities. Educated transportation engineers and other qualified professionals in our local communities should be the ones planning our local transportation infrastructure -- not the provincial government.
I am appalled and offended that the Ford government is willing to put the lives of every day commuters, children, and folks across the age and ability spectrum at greater risk of injury and death just to make the streets in Toronto cushier for drivers.
There is a clear lack of demonstrable evidence to support this bill. It's an embarrassment to Ontario and Canada, is complete nonsense, and should never be approved.
