Thank you for the opportunity to provide comment on ERO: 025-1133, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) proposal for the refinement of the study area for the Northwest GTA Transmission Corridor Identification Study.
The Town of Caledon is in support of having the infrastructure required to meet the energy demands for the forecasted growth of our municipality. As part of broader infrastructure planning, the energy corridor is expected to deliver several key benefits to Caledon, which is to grow from 90,000 to 300,000 residents and from 35,000 to 125,000 jobs by 2051:
• Enabling Future Development
The corridor secures the electricity supply needed to support Caledon’s planned residential and employment growth, especially in expansion areas like South Caledon (e.g., Mayfield West). Without this infrastructure, development aligned with provincial growth targets could be significantly limited. It has been indicated by our hydro partners that new transmission lines are required by 2035 to ensure adequate energy supply.
• Enhancing Economic Competitiveness
A reliable power supply is essential for attracting and retaining major employers. The corridor strengthens Caledon’s position as a destination for commercial and industrial investment.
• Coordinated Infrastructure Planning
Co-locating the transmission line with Highway 413 reflects an integrated planning approach. This coordination streamlines land-use planning, conserves land and facilitates development around major infrastructure.
• Supporting Electrification and Sustainability
The corridor will enable the electrification of heating and transportation (e.g., EVs), helping Caledon build modern, low-carbon communities aligned with climate goals. Non-traditional poles and wires and innovative energy solutions should be investigated and considered in the corridor to align with the Ministry’s directive to modernize local distribution companies and provide low carbon electricity to nearby businesses and homes.
