I'm concerned that Bill 60 will undermine biking infastructure. I have 3 adult children who have purchased homes in the last 4 years. Only one of them owns a car, as they are looking for ways to say money. One family lives in Kitchener and owns one car but needs 2 vehicles to commute to work, so one uses the bike to drop their daughter off at daycare and go to work. They need safe routes. My other two adult children live in Toronto, own homes but not cars and need the bike for errands and to commute to work.
I also use the bike as a second vehicle in Kitchener. I noticed a real increase in the number of scooters and electric bikes on the trails this year. I don't know if the ministry has done any research on market projections for this sector of the transportation industry but anecdotaly it seems many people are choosing this more affordable form of transportation. The ministry will need to consider how to address this expanding sector.
Please understand that many people are using bikes, scooters and e-bikes because they can't afford a car or a second car. It's not just those wealthy enough to own cars who deserve effective transportation infastructure.
