The province’s ban on road reductions is a shortsighted overreach that undermines the safety and autonomy of Ontario’s municipalities. Lane reductions, transit-priority lanes, curb extensions, and narrowed corridors are proven tools in modern traffic engineering, saving lives by slowing vehicles and reducing dangerous conflict points. By eliminating these options, the government is replacing real, evidence-based design with a one size fits all political gesture that puts optics ahead of public safety. Local governments are closest to their roads, their communities, and their collision data; stripping them of the ability to redesign unsafe corridors does nothing but weaken their capacity to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and children.
