This letter is to express opposition to the Ontario Government’s Bill 60 and in support of City of Toronto and its emphasis on cycling and pedestrian infrastructure.
I am a 63-year-old woman, I am retired occupational therapist and still working in my second career as a ceramic artist and educator. I also suffer from Osteoarthritis which resulted in bilateral hip replacements twenty years ago. I took up bicycling a few years ago as both a means of transportation to work, shopping and running errands as well as an opportunity for exercise, solely on the grounds of City of Toronto providing a safe bicycle path on Bloor Street close to my home. I am now able to reach the local shops on Bloor Street safely which decreases my reliance on car on shopping for necessities. The increased ability to exercise keeps me healthy and out of the hospital system, saving taxpayers (including myself) money.
If I lose my safe bicycle paths network, I will be forced to use my car for my getting to work, for shopping and running my errands, as well as having to drive to a gym so I can safely exercise. I will not be able to shop at my local businesses. I live at my home for 25 years and I remember the Bloor Street prior to establishment of bike lanes, it was constantly congested and very dangerous to drive on or bike on and there was no way to park the car anyways.
I would really like to be enlightened as to the advantage of the proposed bill as a solution to traffic problems. If I will be forced to use my care twice a day instead of twice a week, I fail to see how this will NOT contribute to traffic congestion in the City of Toronto.
