We need a city that allows every vehicle user to get around. Bicycles are an important part of that infrastructure. We can't just build roads to get people places; we have to build roads that are destinations in themselves. A shop beside a highway is a bankrupt shop, but a shop in the heart of the distillery district is much more profitable. Cars don't buy things, people do. I want to bike on Toronto streets, but there isn't enough of a bike network yet for people like me, who aren't in great shape and willing to risk being hit by cars. Bike lanes are proven to help all good initiatives.

Keeping arterial roads wide won't actually change traffic due to induced demand. As long as you can funnel a certain amount of cars through a road, people will, and it's not helpful to widen traffic lanes for that. Instead, we need bike lanes already and we don't need more cars. Keep building our bike lanes.
