There are many private motorized vehicles in cities and insufficient road capacity to efficiently move all these motorized vehicles. In other words, the road capacity is insufficient to meet the demands placed on it by motorized vehicles. Increasing capacity helps for a very short time only, but also generates more demand, which then causes congestion again. The solution is NOT to increase road capacity to serve the private automobile. Instead, the solution is to encourage all residents to take alternate means of transportation, such as public transportation (eg. buses, street cars, subways, trains) and active transportation (eg. bicycles and personal mobility devices). Carving out lanes for alternate means of transportation reduces the number of private automobiles on our roads and provides alternate means of transportation. The solution is to increase the number of bike lanes, not to make it more difficult to install bike lanes.
